Slinging Course
Course Outline
Travelift Ireland provides a one-day course in Basic Slinging Safety Awareness Course. The course covers all the basic areas of safe slinging techniques. This includes:
The law & legislation surrounding lifting equipment
Slingers/Banksmans hand signals
Daily inspection of equipment – fault finding and basic maintenance of tackle
Understanding the variety of slings – wire ropes, fibre ropes etc.
Selecting the correct sling(s) for the loads
Fitting the sling(s) correctly
Shortening the sling(s) correctly
The Seven Steps to Safer Slinging
All these areas are reinforced by 2 short dvds and assessed with a written theoretical test.
The second part of the course consists of a practical test. Each trainee is assessed on a number of lifts and marked on the following areas:
Choosing the sling
Fitting the sling
Lifting and manoeuvring the load
Awareness of safety procedures
The set downs and clear up procedure
The course is completed with a question and answer period. Any areas the trainees are uncertain of are cleared up.
The number of trainees on the slinging course is between 6-8. This ensures that each individual can receive sufficient practical experience. The trainee must complete and pass both the theoretical and operational test in order to receive a certificate of basic Slinging Awareness.
Tow Motor & Trailer
Basic Operator Course
(Excluding Reversing with Trailer Coupled)
The course covers all relevant legislation: Health & Safety at Work Order, P.U.W.E.R. ETC.
We impress upon the trainees the duties and responsibilities they have to comply with under such legislation and the safety aspect and accident statistics relevant to such machines.
The theory session is concluded with a question and answer period to ensure the trainees have understood everything so far.
Following on from this we cover pre-operational checks on the Tow Motor to highlight to the trainees the importance of ensuring the vehicle is safe to use each time they come to use it. Learning the pre-operational checks and fault finding is followed by the hazards associated with battery charging and the correct charging procedure. This leads into the practical session
The trainees are made to follow a practical driving manoeuvre including left and right hand turns both forwards and reverse within a confined area. Generally a chicane is set up, using for example traffic cones. Sometimes the working environment the vehicle is being used in provides a natural chicane. The trainees are given supervised practise until they have mastered the exercise and are aware of safe driving practice.
This is followed with hitching the trailer, stability of the load on the trailer and repeating the exercise of negotiating the chicane, this time with a loaded trailer. This illustrates to the trainees the effect of harsh breaking accelerating and steering with a load, the effect on personnel, why you never carry passenger’s etc.
When the trainees have achieved the desired standard a practical test is administered followed by a multiple choice theory test based on all aspects covered during the day.
Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical test an A4 certificate and small wallet sized driving licence is provided.

Workplace Risk Assessment
Course Content
The Risk Assessment itself takes the form of a visit by Mr Stephen Scarborough of Travelift Ireland. This visit is to primarily inspect the premises, observe the processes involved and report on any obvious Health & Safety requirements which would assist the company to achieve high standards, comply with statutory legislation and also keep accident levels to an absolute minimum.
The workplace would typically be split into zones, for instance:-
Zone 1 - Office/Hallway/Reception Area
Zone 2 - Kitchen/Toilets/Washing facilities
Zone 3 - Administration/Additional Offices (other levels)
Zone 4 - Warehousing/Distribution & Goods Inward
Zone 5 - Outside Areas
Zone 6 - Mobile Plant
Notes are made regarding the areas concerned with recommendations for changes to be made if necessary.
We compile a detailed report of the findings and recommendations to the client.
